What to do with chair rail

So, you have moved to a new house and you want to paint walls to give them a fresh look but you find chair rails in some rooms. Are you unsure of what to do with chair rail? If so, then this post is going to be of great help for you as it discusses some practical tips on what to do with your old chair rails.

Wrap it with burlap

You can cut the chair rail to fit the room or wall and then wrap it in burlap. You don’t have to worry about painting it because you will be covering it with paint anyway! I recommend using a stain sealer on your wood first so that the stain doesn’t bleed through once you start painting.

The natural texture of the burlap is so pretty! You could add a piece of trim around the edges of the burlap as well if you wanted something more finished-looking.

Cut shapes out of chair rail

If you’re feeling artistic, you can cut shapes out of your chair rails and use them in other creative ways around your home. For some reason, I really like this idea.

Paint them!

Painting on them would be a cool way to add wall art to your space as well! You could use a jigsaw or Dremel to cut out the shapes, you probably want something smaller for intricate details though like that.

If you have just a small bit of chair rail left, just paint it turquoise and then attach it to your mirror with some cute ribbon or lace:

This is what I’m doing in my bathroom this summer! My mom helped me brainstorm how we could jazz up my ugly blue chair rail and she suggested this idea! We are going to paint the chair rail white and then I am going to cover it with fabric similar to these hearts so that it kind of looks like lace. Then I am going to attach it with some ribbon or baker’s twine. An added bonus is that it will hide some of my old and rusty nails as well!

Remove the chair rails and use them in your DUY projects

If none of the above options suit you, simply remove the chair rails. Using old chair rails in your DIY projects gives you a chance to not only keep them out of the landfill but also allows you to do something creative with them since they are no longer on your wall! What have you done with any of the chair rails in your house?

How to plan out your new chair rail?

When planning out your chair rail, remember that you need to give yourself room for the panels or moldings that will be placed on top of it. Typically, one inch between each piece is sufficient, but you can make yours as wide as you want (within reason).

The wider your chair rail, the more work you’ll need to do in order to keep a clean line between your wall and floor.

If you decide that putting up a chair rail is just too much trouble, try just painting or staining the existing moldings on your walls instead. This will save you time and effort but won’t give you quite as dramatic an effect.

Try some samples of molding and paneling on your walls before you put up anything permanent, especially if you’ve picked out an unusual color or pattern that’s unlike anything else in your home. Once you know how everything looks together, it will be much harder to change your mind.

In case you do not have enough technical information on chair rails and want an easy-to-understand introduction of chairs rails and their benefits, the rest of the article must be very interesting for you.

You can do a lot of interesting things with chair rails such as installing crown moldings above the chair rails or even installing a baseboard at the bottom of the wall. Using this technique, you can create an interesting border that calls attention to your doors and windows.

What is a chair rail?

The chair rail is the vertical border that runs along the walls of a room, staring at the floor and running up to the ceiling. It’s also referred to as a skirting board or baseboard in some places outside America.

Why chair rails are called chair rails?

It’s not called so because it really looks like a rung on the chair, or so we are told. It was originally called so because of the decorative effect it creates – if you look at its pattern closely enough, it looks like a line of people sitting in chairs. They are named chair rails because of their original use.

Chair rails were the original way of defining the room area – they marked where people sitting in chairs are supposed to stay within a room. They became popular during the Victorian era when fireplaces began being built further from the walls and it was necessary to keep people from bumping into them as they walked by.

What if I don’t use the chair rails?

You could get away with not using chair rails if you like a more modern look, but it is advisable to at least use just the topmost part of the chair rail – it will still give you some sort of border that helps define the space.

If one doesn’t put chair rails, it can have various disadvantages. With the absence of a clearly marked border, it becomes difficult to distinguish what is a wall and what is furniture. Also, It will make the transition between walls and floor very abrupt. If you ever visit any historical house in America, notice how they have used both the upper and lower parts of their chair rails with great effect.

So, how do you know what kind of chair rails are the best?

Now, you are interested in buying chair rails. But how would you know which one to buy? For your ease and understanding, I have compiled a list of key features of the best chair rails.

They match your wall and flooring

If you have hardwood floors, then the best chair rails are going to be made of hardwood. Likewise, if you have brick walls, then a chair rail out of stone or concrete will look better than one made out of wood. It’s also worth noting that different types of wood take paint differently, so make sure you know how yours is going to react before you start working on it!

They match the plaster or other material covering your walls

For example, if your baseboards are covered in molding made from clay or ceramic, a similarly-made accent piece would look much better than one that’s been painted with latex paint. If what you’re looking at doesn’t seem to match, then don’t use it.

They are simple and straight

If you start out with something too ornate or detailed, you’ll never be able to get the base molding for your walls perfect no matter what you do. Instead of putting hard work into a chair rail that will be covered up in a few weeks’ time, put that effort into making sure your baseboards line up correctly as they reach the floor. That’s what people will see when they come in through the door!

The best way to figure out what kind of chair rails you want is by visiting other homes in your area or getting photos from real estate agents online. You can also check books out from the library. It’s easier to see how things are done than it is to try and explain them with words alone.

You have decided which chair rail you need, now what?

Once you’ve decided what kind of chair rail you want, there are a few ways that you can get it up on your walls:

You can hire professional painters to do the job for you. This option might be best if you have very ornate moldings or patterns that will need to be painted over a number of times before they’re perfect. If your house has thicker, more decorative woodwork or plaster designs, this is probably also best for you.

You could also start by doing the prep work yourself, then hire a person or persons with experience to complete the job.

For example, if you make sure to line up your walls correctly before having someone come in to put up crown molding, there shouldn’t be too much clean-up for them and they will likely do a better quality job than an amateur would! This is especially useful if you haven’t yet decided on a style and you just want to get in there and get it done.

You could also choose to do the job yourself, but with help! If you have a friend or family member that has experience putting up paneling, then they can stay at your house for a few days and give you an extra hand as you put up your chair rails. This way, you don’t spend money hiring their services, but they still come in to make sure things are done right.

Final thoughts

So, what do we conclude here? Chairs rails are definitely worth it. They may not petty and unnecessary until you haven’t installed them. But once you get them installed on your walls, you realize that they add a lot more than protection for your walls. Rail chairs are not expensive, they are easy to install and remove and they come in a great variety. On top of it, installing chair rails can be a great fun activity for you and your partner. We therefore highly recommend trying rail chairs in your home and office. If you have any further questions on this subject, please feel write to write to us. Good
